The following is a listing of off-campus summer undergraduate research opportunities spanning most natural sciences disciplines. Opportunities exist across the country and are a great way to get valuable experience, both to list on your resume and to help you determine your career goals.

This list shows programs available nationwide.  Contact your department faculty member if you are interested in one or more. These opportunities are competitive and have application deadlines ranging from late November to February and early March.


Biology

 Through GLBRC’s Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) at Michigan State University (East Lansing, MI), students are engaged in a research program across multiple disciplines, including biochemistry, plant biology, genetics, microbiology, ecology, and crop sciences.

The NSF funded KBS REU Site “Ecological & Evolutionary Dynamics in a Changing World” gives students an opportunity to conduct full-time research in collaboration with our outstanding faculty, postdocs and graduate students.

 The National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Heart Lung and Blood Institute and Michigan State University (MSU) are sponsoring the Biomedical Research for University Students in Health Sciences (BRUSH) Summer Research Program at MSU for undergraduate and veterinary students interested in the biomedical sciences and research-related careers.

 The Plant Genomics at MSU REU Program provides high quality research and training experiences for undergraduates interested in biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, chemistry, bioinformatics, and computational sciences.

The STEP-UP Program provides hands-on summer research experience for high school and undergraduate students interested in exploring research careers.

 offers competitive scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science health-related research. 

 supports all students with a focus on increasing underrepresented populations in drug abuse research. Through this program, undergraduates age 18 and older are introduced to the field of substance use and addiction research by participating in research internships with NIDA's distinguished scientists at universities across the United States. Students work with leading scientists for eight weeks during the summer. The internship may include laboratory experiments, data collection, data analysis, formal courses, participation in lab meetings, patient interviews, manuscript preparation, and literature reviews. In addition, it is expected that each intern will deliver a formal presentation on their research project at the end of the internship.

 Students will learn behavioral methodology, including the design and use of ethograms, how to use software specifically designed for behavioral observation, and statistical methods. S/he will also learn about species specific monkey behavior and how to improve the psychological well- being of captive animals.

  The Summer in Biomedical Science (SIBS) Undergraduate Research Program will provide the opportunity for young people to be instructed in the techniques of modern biology while becoming integrated members of a vibrant clinical and scientific community.

Computer and Data Science

CMU is top-ranked for computer science, artificial intelligence specialization, and robotics. We launched the first academic department in robotics, the first Ph.D. in robotics, and is the world’s largest university-affiliated robotics research group.

Environmental Studies

 hosts an intensive summer research program in sensing and smart systems for talented undergraduate students across the country.  Closely related to the Internet of Things, smart systems represent an emerging class of distributed systems that provide real-time awareness of conditions, trends, and patterns to support improved decision-making, and often, automation. The on-campus research will focus on I-SENSE's three main program areas: Infrastructure Systems, Marine and Environment and Health and Behavior.

 EnSURE is a 10-week, full-time research experience open to all undergraduates who are studying at institutions in the United State, including Puerto Rico. EnSURE students work on a substantive, faculty-guided research project in one of eight engineering departments and participate in professional development activities, including attending weekly seminars and completing periodic writing assignments.
