Brussels, the capital of Belgium, is a vibrant and diverse city known for its rich history, beautiful architecture, and international atmosphere. It's the heart of European politics, hosting institutions like the European Union and NATO, making it a hub for diplomacy and culture. The city offers a mix of modern and medieval elements, from stunning Art Nouveau buildings to the historic Grand Place square. Known for its delicious chocolate, waffles, and beer, Brussels also has a thriving arts scene, great shopping districts, and plenty of green spaces. For American exchange students, it’s a place where they can experience European life and history while embracing a multicultural environment.
UCLouvain, Campus Saint Louis – Brussels located in the heart of Brussels, Belgium, was founded in 1858 and currently enrolls approximately 4,213 students across four faculties:
- Faculty of Philosophy, Languages & Literatures, and Human Sciences
- Faculty of Law
- Faculty of Economics, Social and Political Sciences, and Communication
- Faculty of Translation and Interpreting
The university offers bilingual and trilingual (French, English, and Dutch) programs in various fields, including Economics and Management, Political Science, Sociology and Anthropology, and Information and Communication.
UCLouvain has a main urban campus and a satellite campus located two miles away, easily accessible by public transport. The main campus is situated in a bustling area of Brussels, which is well-served by public transportation, with nearby amenities such as restaurants, shops, and even a large shopping mall (Mall C2 center which has a grocery store in the basement as well as several food courts). The satellite campus is located near the European Parliament, offering students easy access to political institutions and international organizations.
Curriculum and Student Life
UCLouvain offers a range of academic programs suitable for exchange students, including English-taught courses in several fields. The university also offers a French language course for non-native speakers at various levels (beginner to advanced) throughout the year. One week before the terms start, students are summoned to the Welcome Week to Belgian Culture. This week consists of conferences and site visits in Brussels and other places in Belgium. It provides a networking opportunity for international students and it is a way for students to integrate into the Belgian way of life.
The university offers various student clubs, with the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) being one of the most active in organizing events and activities for exchange students. There is also a health center on campus where students can access free consultations with a doctor and mental health support services and an office of accommodation.
Housing and Meals
UCLouvain offers student housing in a new, on-campus residence Hall, called Ommegang. Each room comes fully furnished with a bed, desk, chair, wardrobe, and/or bookcase. Each floor is equipped with a communal kitchen. There is a small cafeteria in the residence hall. A meal plan is not included.
Requirements
Minimum GPA : 2.75
Language : Must have completed level 102* of college French.
*For students fulfilling the requirements of a language major or minor, or the International Studies major, the completion of 202 or equivalent in the appropriate language and a 3.0 GPA average in language classes are required prior to beginning the program.
Must have attended ½ðɳÓéÀÖ University full-time for at least one semester.
